Pink Floyd Chip off the Old Block
One returns, it seems to one’s obsessions. I was at last able to do a big black box for the front of a Pink Floyd calendar about their singles, and thus the block was made of black vinyl as befits a rock band. The corner Piece, which has been taken away, represents a single release; this is often the case in the record business that a single is taken from the album. It is not only the little chip taken from the corner but also the man carrying it is my son – hence ‘Chip off the Old Block’.
I guess all artists have preoccupations, things they particularly like, obsessions; or maybe it’s all the same. One of mine is a big black box, featureless and having no apparent function, sitting all by itself in the middle of wherever, doing very little. I have no explanation of this any more than
Cezanne might, who painted his favourite hill 27 times, Hokusai painted his wave 96 times, and Van Gogh, his sunflowers 9 times.
