“Part of the film score of Frances the Mute by the Mars Volta concerned an addicted individual. Back in Juarez as kids, their mentor was heavily addicted and in a coma, coming in and out of consciousness. So in my mind’s eye I saw a town in which everybody was addicted-it didn’t matter to what, sex, gambling, drink-they were all characterised by one particular feature-that is that the addict thinks he is in control and knows where he is going, but he doesn’t know shit. To symbolise this contradiction, all the drivers wore couture hoods.”
