Biffy Clyro Only Revolutions
“There was much talk about change and the battle of the sexes on Only Revolutions. It actually came from a book where left-hand pages were written from a girl’s point of view and the right hand from the man’s, asking: does real change require extreme measures like a revolution? It is also applicable to a record going round. Revolutions stuck in my mind, where one of the prominent displays are flags.

Dan said ‘gags of flags’ and both are big issue so I envisaged huge flags that came from gags. So ‘huge is huge’ but the sample flag was so big it went over the top of the studio and down the other side! Thus we took slightly smaller flags to a hilltop in Bedfordshire and tied one end to a scaffolding tower and let them blow naturally in the wind.
It was fantastic! The shapes were phenomenal, undulating waves of material flapping, cascading, rippling, a joy to behold and real, all natural. The protagonists hold weapons and the table they can no longer sit around burns in the background, and the flag shapes express what they cannot articulate..It is one of the most exhilarating things I’ve ever done.”
